Why Lakshmi?
Lakshmi Ramachandran is a scientific writer and author. Lakshmi graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2006 and is the recipient of the Dean’s award for outstanding dissertation research from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY. Since then she has donned multiple roles in her career from being a drug discovery scientist at AstraZeneca to being a science consultant and presently a scientific writer at the MBI (Mechanobiology Institute), NUS.
Besides science, Lakshmi is passionate about food as well as communication through speech/writing. She has co-authored a unique memoir-cum-recipe book for students/novice cooks titled “Roomies/Foodies”, which is India’s first crowdsourced non-fiction book. Lakshmi has also been an active participant in a social project called ‘Mission Peace Bangalore’ founded to reduce noise pollution levels in Bangalore, India. She is presently a member of the Women In Science (WIS) committee at MBI. Lakshmi lives in Singapore with her husband Ashwin and two boys Madhav (5 years) and Shiv (1 year).
In her talk “Changing Lanes and Shifting Gears in Science Careers”, Lakshmi will present alternate science careers based on her experiences, with particular emphasis on work-life balance. She will also share her experiences in becoming a published author and discuss the importance of prioritizing and adaptability in overall growth and success.
