MBI Young Scientist Group

The Mechanobiology Institute’s Young Scientist Group is an organization of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows dedicated to empowering fellow young scientists to make significant contributions in science, industry and the community.

The MBI Young Scientist Group comprises two divisions: the MBI Graduate Student Committee and the MBI Postdoc Committee.

The Young Scientist Group has a three-fold mission:

  1. To support young scientists in growing their early careers through workshops and seminars intended to hone both technical and soft skills
  2. To connect these researchers to alumni, professors and industry professionals
  3. To involve young scientists in the greater research community through science communication and outreach

We seek to foster an atmosphere of support and involvement within MBI, where scientists of all levels can interact and engage in various platforms and discussions together. The MBI YSG also aims to strengthen ties between MBI’s young scientists and external organizations, which can pave the way for more scientific collaborations, industry partnerships, and personal development.

An integral part of MBI YSG is the organization of seminars and events that cater to young scientists’ needs–from technical workshops to career development opportunities. Our past events include student conferences, postdoc retreats and career talks from industry experts.

MBI Postdoc and Student Seminar Series

The series provides speakers the opportunity to practice in presenting work to a non-specialist audience, learn how to speak to a time limit as is the case for conference presentations, and gain practice and experience in learning to deal with questions. Attendees benefit from a greater awareness of work across MBI, exposure to possible new techniques that may be useful for their own work, and the opportunity to ask questions in a more informal environment.

MBI Young Scientist Outreach

An integral part of the MBI Young Scientist’s mission is the organization and promotion of events and activities furthering opportunities for graduate students and postdocs in the sciences. Our members are involved in mentorship, networking and outreach—from participation in seminars and discussions, to the conception, creation and deployment of symposiums, career talks and more.
