MBI Hosts Students from Raffles Girls School!

On 28 April 2026, 21 students from Raffles Girls’ School visited MBI for an afternoon outreach programme introducing them to the field of mechanobiology. The session opened with an intriguing talk by Prof. Yusuke Toyama on how physical forces influence biological systems and a glimpse into his unconventional career path. He encouraged students to take their time exploring future pathways, keep their options open and adopt a broad, interdisciplinary perspective rather than a narrow focus.

This was followed by a sharing session with postdoc students Raageshwari Arulselvam from the Young Lab and Kelly Tan Jue Yu from the Chan Lab, offering insights into academic journeys and life in the lab. After a safety briefing, students rotated through live demonstrations in small groups, including the HMG core facility, microscopy core facility, hydrogel experiments and micropipetting, gaining practical exposure to techniques used in modern research.

The students left with a deeper appreciation and understanding of a researcher’s life and interdisciplinary science with its unlimited possibilities.
