What is zyxin?

What is Zyxin? Zyxin is enriched along actin filaments, stress fiber bundles, and at cell-cell or cell-matrix adhesion sites [1][2]. Zyxin is specifically found in more mature adhesions [3] and its absence in early [...]

How does integrin clustering affect integrin signalling?

How does integrin clustering affect integrin signaling? Localization of Integrin The concentration of β subunits is generally high while that of α subunit is the factor limiting the amount of heterodimers that localize on [...]

What is tensin?

What is tensin? Tensin is a cytoskeleton scaffolding protein that was named for its ability to form a bridge that maintains tension between the actin filaments and cell-matrix adhesion sites (reviewed in [1]). A [...]

What is the NF-κB pathway?

What is the NF-κB pathway? NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa light chain enhancer of activated B cells) is a family of highly conserved transcription factors that regulate many important cellular behaviours, in particular, inflammatory responses, [...]

How do neurotrophins, collapsin, and ephrins, serve as guidance cues?

How do neurotrophins, collapsin, and ephrins, serve as guidance cues? Neurotrophins Stimulating filopodia formation A secreted guidance cue which stimulates filopodia formation in growth cones. Two examples of secreted neurotrophins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) [...]

What are guidance cues?

What are guidance cues? During neural development, highly motile structures on the developing neurites, called growth cones, are guided by signals from the extracellular environment. Guidance cues come in many different forms, from diffusible [...]

Molecular Mechanisms of Mechanobiology

I decided to switch into the world of biology after I received my BS in chemistry from Zhejiang University. With the interest in things happening inside nucleus, I joined Prof. Shiva’s lab as a graduate student, to study the role of external mechanical signals on gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. During my first one and a half years I developed a method to visualize active transcription sites on open chromatin spreads using super-resolution microscopy. Presently I’m studying the role of cell geometric constraints on 3D organization of chromosomes by using multiple techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), confocal imaging, and super-resolution imaging.
